The Wray High School of Business Principles of Marketing class conducted focus groups based on a scenario in which Yuma High School and Wray High School would combine into one larger school to be built in Eckley, CO called United High School. The Marketing class students conducted realistic focus groups in which students were asked to determine a new mascot for this newly combined high school. Focus groups were intentionally formed and involved student athletes, student club presidents and randomly selected students from all grades to get a good cross section of Wray students. Students were led to believe that this was a real situation.
In order to debrief the students, the following announcement was made at the end of the school day:
Good Afternoon Wray Eagles!
Today, several students participated in focus groups addressing a mascot selection for United High School. The mascot chosen in the focus groups was the Cavaliers. We appreciate every students’ participation in this Marketing project.
Every effort was made to make this seem as realistic as possible to simulate an actual focus group. We sincerely apologize for any emotional distress this project may have caused you.
Rest assured, there are no plans for us to be anything but the Wray Eagles.
Have a Great Day Wray High School!
