On Wednesday, March 30th, the Wray School District celebrated the dedication of the Buchanan Gymnasium. Community members as well as 7th-12th grade students and staff were present to witness the dedication. Honored guests were Dr. Robert and Jane Buchanan.
The Buchanan name has been a mainstay in the Wray community for decades. Dr. Lawrence Douglass Buchanan (Dr. Robert Buchanan's father) was instrumental in many of Wray's physical improvements such as the City Hall, paved streets, a 1954 high school gymnasium and a hospital built in 1952. His longtime dedication to the school district which included 19 years as a school board member was recognized with the naming of the junior high building as Buchanan Junior High School.
With the recent consolidation of school buildings, the Wray School District wished to honor the Buchanan family and their commitment to our community and school district. Given Dr. Robert Buchanan's love of basketball it made sense to rename the newly completed junior high gym as the Buchanan Gymnasium.
Current School Board members Grant Bledsoe, Nancy Helling and Melanie Godsey were on hand to give the Buchanan family a gift from the Wray School District. With the help of local residents, Trevor Zuege and Monica Zwirn, a plaque was created using basketball flooring from the old Buchanan gym. A picture taken at the very last basketball practice held in the old Buchanan gymnasium is attached to the basketball flooring with a small sign under it that reads, "Thank you for helping us build our nest. Wray Eagles Past-Present and Future".
The Wray School District thanks the Buchanan family for their dedication and support of our school and community. We hope their community mindedness lives on in the students who fill the Buchanan Gymnasium each and every day.
On March 31, Wray's Communities That Care (CTC) met as a whole coalition to discuss goals and board structure for the upcoming year. The meeting was well attended by many key leaders, important community members, and youth from the Wray School District. CTC is kicking off a 5-year grant to bring together community voices. CTC is excited about our youth and community leadership coming together to bring more opportunities to Wray!
